So in the past few years, China has taken over as the dominant nation in DOTA. I never knew!
But it's serious enough that not only has some rich kid bought a team with $3 million of his dad's cash, but videos of dota events in China have substantial crowds. I have to wonder, though, what is it about DOTA that has managed to strike a nerve in China? AFAIK, China isn't a WC3 or SC powerhouse, even though internet games and a >1 billion population would certainly enable a strong scene. Even before that major team purchase, the very top teams were full-on, salaried professionals. SC1 was dominated to such an extent by Korea that it's possible no other nation would ever catch up, and maybe that put a damper on people trying to break into that game professionally in China.
