the problem is that if this is all we do, then the number of ppl who stick around and put in effort to be good will go down

I'll go out on a weak limb and attempt to speak for the masses here. I really don't think people who are here to learn will find a (while not necessarily hostile) tough, competitive environment a negative thing. I'm not saying we should be scathing towards new members, but if they're not part of ^that red text. They don't belong here to begin with.

Yes, some people eat a baseball bat, and become discouraged. But I'll be damned if discouragement ever stopped an actual fighting gamer from doing anything.

Also, in place of BBG, put in OHC forums. Give Circ something else to mod.

btw, I'm pretty sure it's possible to have "forums" link to outside websites. maybe just redirect bbg and zepp to ohc

i think Dustloop's biggest problem (and i guess any forum of sufficient size) is that new members

1. don't know where to look for info

2. don't know who to trust

i assumed ppl would be smart enough to read teh dammned sitckied threads and the beginner subforum, but I don't have any statistics for how many new ppl were educated by these threads and how many ignored them and just started being idiots. would a merit system help with this? in theory it'd help with problem #2, but i don't know.

i've been looking at vbulletin mods, and 'medal system' mods do exist, and i think they can be split between categories (so there coudl be one for 'storyline', 'gameplay', 'community organizing', etc).

Put it that way, merit system sounds good.

Perhaps have a lower merit of individual characters, then people who understand the gameplay on a more broad level (one for GG, one for BB, one for both), story, community, art, etc. Give out an idiot badge too for leverage.

Its a public acknowledgment from the mod team demonstrating that you're worth listening to. Yes, winning a major tournament is good grounds for getting a badge.

I agree. Honestly, we're not based off a niche game that wasn't mainstream and took hard work to play anymore.

I think a badge system is ok. This may be a bit beauracratic (sp), but this is the way I see it.

Various badges to get obtain...no this shit ain't pokemon. I'll try to use examples.

Character info contribution - At the approval of said character's mod, gets a badge to show they know what they're talking about and can be trusted to deliver good information. An example would be Dacidbro who posts good info on the Bang boards.

Gamplay contribution - probably handled more by admins, as this would show the person made a significant contribution/article type thing towards general gameplay mechanics. An example would be Stunedge who has posted system/information guides/loc test data.

Video contribution - Again, approval of mod, shows the user contributes videos of some kind (gameplay only preferably to those with it). This is used so people can find vids easier by looking at their post history. And example would be Zeth07 who does the Bang video thread.

Story contribution - Circ or whoever else does Zepp Museum stuff can give these out. Yes Blade would have a badge. Deal with it.

TxGG/BB whatever - T=top. T8SB2010BB for instance. Or W for the winner I guess. People placing high in any major, maybe even tournament with a certain amount of people in it. A bit complex looking with the numbers? Maybe. But you only need to see the T or W to know that person is legit. The example I used in that coding would be for anyone who took Top 8 at Season's Beatings this year for BB. Top 4 have T4, Lord Knight would have T2 or RU, Zidane T1 or W.

Because of the approval requirements, and the classification, not only is it difficult/you have to make a significant contribution to get, it could weed out those motivated only for badges.

That's my thoughts at least.

A merit system is definitely worth a try. I wouldn't make it like rep though. SRK's new system is good, if it can be improved upon I'd go for it. I like DaiAndOh's idea.

I would just fear that people who don't have badges aren't taken seriously. But it will help identify good posters, and others can learn a thing or two, and post good info themselves (hopefully creating a cycle of positive attitudes).

I dunno if I like the badge system because its a good idea or because I'd get a top 8 SB badge and im an egotistical bastard.

Probably the latter lets do this.

At first I thought this badge idea was terrible and likely a joke. But thinking more about it, it's really to impart authoritativeness on topics to certain knowledgeable individuals. I'm now 110% behind this idea.

Only thing is, we'd probably need "degrees" of merit. I mean, I know Hakumen, but I'm not Spark Tier for example. I can still be technical and give a lot of good info, I just won't know as much as Spark. It would also rectify another theoretical issue: will newcomers end up ignoring any who does NOT have a badge?

But whatever the case, I think an icon of sorts showing that you know your stuff is a good idea, but I also hope it salvages Dustloop's current condition and brings in some higher standards of posting. One issue that's always bothered me that I thought contributes to the newbies asking dumb stuff is that information is fairly disorganized and scattered through huge threads. So instead of looking through it, new guys just ask a question that's possibly already been asked 20 times before. I don't see this problem being easily corrected, but it's there.

A formal system is perhaps not what some would like to see, but it's kind of necessary when a forum gets bigger and needs to accommodate more people.

The mods don't need to reward everyone. They just need to badge the guys who have more important things to say than arguing basic gameplay concepts against scrubs. If you don't like the idea of a merit system, then see it as a "shut up the scrubs who disagree" badge system.

And again with basic psychology... but people can only keep 7 +/- 2 things in their head at a time. So no more than 7 badges. Keep the system simple, or else people won't understand it. The fewer badges the better.

"Moderator" Badge (so you know who is bad at fighting games).

Henaki hands badge.

A badge system isn't going to do much outside of making matters look like they're superficially being worked on.

The inherent notion that you need to 'reward' people like a bunch of dogs on being good community members is pretty silly.

You should recruit people to re-do character forums and the like, WIPE THE FORUM ENTIRELY and start over. Outside of that, 'badges' and the like aren't going to do much of anything, this 'community' has been a rut for far too long, to the point where there's some odd social logistics here you could probably write a college thesis on.

I would sooner link people to mizuumi's BB wiki's then I would link them here.

Anime.

Hopefully Mizuumi and Dustloop will compliment each other.

I personally don't like badges being used as a reward system, but I do like them used as a method to determine who knows their stuff.

As such, IMO, the whole process needs to be extremely limited.
