it seems like all the bb/p4a/people new to gg plan on picking up valentine. i wonder if its because of her aesthetic design? she certainly is more modern in a kinda bb sense. maybe her actual gameplay design in more like some of the newer arcsys games, though i dont know. do you think the older guilty gear characters are aesthetically dated in some way or lacking some of the kind of more gimmicky/very specific mechanical stuff  that could possibly turn off newer arcsys players to them?

I think it might just be at this point everyone's all "whoa look at the new girl", and maybe a lot of older players built up a lot of character loyalty. In my case, Johnny isn't in the game yet, and you know, cute + dark skin = win in my book.

I always liked Daisuke's touch on the anime aesthetic (I liked the character art from X2 and #R, a little less...anime). It doesn't appear super outdated, but I'm no expert.

I've considered that the Drive thing from BB was inspired by GG's tendency to give the characters unique systems (or just really distinctive characteristics) e.g. Eddie gauge, HOS' charge, Jam's seals, Robo Ky's meter/steam, ABA's blood packets, Baiken's guard cancels, Bridget's yo yo, Zappa's spirits. GG makes the character's uniqueness pretty overt.

I wouldn't imagine so, I'd bet money that her overhead sword swing animation isn't actually an overhead, kinda like Bedman's Deja vu  Task C. Seems like it would be too easy otherwise.

yeah i wonder if her sword swings count as projectiles. cause overhead projectile + YRC = unblocks

Damn, I won't be able to go to the Sega tournament on the Xrd site this weekend.  Busy during the day on Saturday.  I'll probably just hit up Platon for casuals at night or they might have a tourney.

Despite the vast majority of newer 2D fighters using an anime aesthetic and featuring characters with stylized appearances and oversized weapons and all that, the core cast of GG is still very recognizable.  The characters continue to inspire knockoffs (or "homages" if you want to be kind) in other games, and not just fighters.  So no, I would say GG characters are the opposite of aesthetically dated.

As for the gameplay aspect, I don't think more unusual play mechanics automatically make a character more popular.  If they did, the usage percentage between Sol/Ky and Bedman would probably be flipped.  I think players are excited about Valentine because A) she's a boss, B) she's brand new, and C) a lot of people are pervs who get excited looking at half-naked jailbait.

Mind giving a few examples? Because nothing comes to my mind other than characters that just happen to share the same archetypes or tropes (a Chinese girl doesn't equal a Jam clone).

Hell a chinese girl would most likely make most people think of chun li tbh. But no one has a ring the size of a man's torso for hair.

How old is Ram-chan? She looks too old be considered jailbait.

She might only be like a day old or something, though I agree that going by looks I wouldn't call her jailbait.

 

though, on the subject of Rammy, I'm really liking what I see so far, though I'm a bit confused as to how her meter gain works, or rather I'm wondeirng if it's intentional she doesn't gain meter from her punches and kicks (at least is seems she doesn't) or if it's a glitch or something. Maybe it's to encourage using her swords more since they do seem to give a ton of meter. either way, her supers look pretty good too, I'm really looking forward to her.

Yeah, from the look of things she really doesn't gain any meter from her combination attacks at all. In fact, she doesn't gain it from her specials either. It seems only the swords give meter to burn though they give a substantial amount of it.

@Venom players, how does Xrd Venom stack up to his other iterations? Is he better so far compared to his ACR version, which I constantly hear is ass (though I never discovered why that's the case).

XRD venom feels wayyyy better than ac+r venom. Damage is now a lot better. He is a lot more like AC venom. 

Now he can easily carry you to corner and start his famous pressure game. Execution seems to be also a bit easier for XRD venom. No more "tough" 6p 6hs CR combos.

He's not more like AC Venom, but rather a buffed Reload Venom.

Definitely better than AC+R, damage is more in line with the rest of the cast. New j.D looks incredible, QV is pretty cool.

He can do some pretty unique things with YRC (regarding using it on summons, teleport)

New Stinger/Carcass mechanics are a mixed bag. They've done good things, especially with his teleport getting buffed back pre AC+R, but there are some situations where shooting the extra ball would be good.

Yeah the meterless corner carry on standing opponents is pretty damn good.

Bishop Runout is starting to see some use with Stinger.

New formations have a lot of similar applications, but there's some cute new things you can do. Placing a 1 ball setup behind Venom is...different...

He may get worse as people get better with neutral and reversal blitz shield.

His execution is generally easier (no more 6k, no more 6hs carcass), but it seems that some tricky charge tricks with c.S(1), Carcass are more applicable.

That said, he still has 0 reversals and gets mauled badly. Not sure how 6p is looking this particular game as an anti-air...

I honestly think Bedman looks more like a BB character than Ramlethal. Anyways, I'm not too happy about the gratuitious underboob. Her design was god-tier before all this footage, now it's okay. Fanservice can ruin a character for me, it is the number 1 reason why I can't main Makoto, despite her gameplay suiting my style greatly.

I always find trouble figuring out why would fanservice turn a potential mainer off. I mean, if it fits your playstyle, you overall like the character, you aren't gynophobic (lol) just play her! I'm guessing you like the rushdown type of charcters so if for any reason jam won't be in this game you should consider ram if you prefer her over millia. Just trying to say don't sweat the small stuff and use the character to make people salty online! She looks like she also has a zato-1 unblockable right now lol.

man i dont know why you think shes gonna be a rushdown char or anything comparable to jam... i think she has tools to control space and run setplay type stuff but i dont really see her being a get up in your face and push lots of buttons type.i think destin was right on with the bridget comparison although her placed swords dont seem nearly as flexible as the yo-yo at least from what i've seen. i also really doubt that vertical swipe thing from the placed sword hits overhead/therefore leads to an unblockable. i'd like to think arcsys isnt stupid enough to allow that kind of move to hit high. on the aesthetic aspects of picking a main: a weird thing about FG's and especially "anime" games is that it seems like a lot of people pick mains based on who is the most moe...like there are dudes who will only play cute girls in absolutely every game. this kind of weirds me out but of course its totally harmless and a lot of them are super rad players.

Maybe a verstile style of playing, depending of how she uses the swords and how many aren't available for her to use.
