Hey all, I was wondering if anyone could post a brief list of the types of characters (rush down, lock down, zoner, etc) and which characters fit into those types. I ask cause right now, I tend to play rush down in general, but I'd like to give other types a shot. Only problem though, I don't know entirely what everyone else falls under. I've tried looking around online, searched on here, and couldn't find anything. I did find a site that had several different types, some that I'd never have thought of, but nothing saying what characters fall into them. I've seen it mentioned in some of the character threads, but (unless I missed something when reading through them) not in all. I'm still a beginner in this game, so I'm not sure what all really goes into defining a character and what not (I'll be checking the guides and all on here for that). I'm not looking for pages on pages of why a character counts as, say, rushdown. More just something like this: <character type> : <characters> Or <character> : <categories> Oh yeah, and I am aware that most characters fall into several categories. I'm looking for what they mainly excel in, though I'm up for hearing other, fitting play styles too. I don't know, I'd just like to know ahead of time what type of character I'm playing. Right now, I've been using Sol and Ky and have been playing them in a rush down style...despite reading things saying Ky isn't meant for that kind of play style. Thanks in advance and apologies if this has been covered before (despite my unsuccessful searches).

I'm not sure if these categories are correct. Most chars do rushdown and lockdown anyway, is it not? Even Pot does it? From Pot to Sol, from Bridget to May whatever. It's all about rushdown and lockdown, it's a standard way of play.

Well, some are still better at it than others, but yeah...that's how Guilty Gear plays...or like any fighting game. Get advantage, keep advantage, win. If the opponent is free to move, you're giving up the advantage (usually). Often this can't be avoided, but the goal is to keep them in your range until something hits and then back in after doing the damage.

It's hard to categorize the Guilty Gear characters, per se. A more accurate way to look at it would be to take all of the different factors that go into a fight and rate each character in each category.

The truth is you can play any charachter the way you want. There is no set pattern of what you have to do or what combos you can use to win. Pick someone you like and stick with them for a while. If you can't make the progress you want with them, go back and try learning someone else. Sol and Ky are pretty much the newbie welcoming charachters. I think you'll enjoy the game more if you pick a charachter you kind of identify with one way or another. (Including Ky and Sol)

I see...seeing the way some people talk made me think otherwise. Like Venom and Testament, I remember reading somewhere, were said to be best played as zoners more than anything else. Reading things like that, I had thought every character had a specific play style they excel at, like that. Also, I do want to clear something up. I'm not new to the series at all....but I'm still a beginner in terms of skill. I read back through my first post and it looked like I implied that I was brand new to the series as a whole. I've tried everyone at least once, but Sol and Ky, specifically Ky, have been my best characters. Alot of things are just way over my head though...apparently cause I keep trying to play it like Street Fighter/King of Fighters (apparently it's not meant to be played like that at all...or so I read). I don't know, I just thought if I learned what the other characters excel more in, then maybe I could adapt to that and do a bit better with them. Thanks anyway though.

I'm an amateur myself, but I think every character has a *unique* playstyle, in terms of movement, zoning, and lockdown. So experiment!

Sol is hardly newbie now =(.

i think compared to other games, "everyone" in GG is rushdown. that seems to be how the game is designed.

however, a while ago, there was a thread that was compiled from an arcadia or tougeki damashii magazine, that broke up the characters into relative difficulty and primary/secondary styles. (maybe this was slash...) i wonder if anyone still has that, somewhere.

Rtl42, if you are talking about an article from the "Break Encyclopedia" Mook, it indeed was already mentioned somewhere in Dustloop but in the meantime Skati, here it is :

VERY EASY : KY (Standard) - SOL (Standard) - ABA (Power) - FAUST (Tricky)

EASY : O.SOL (Speed) - BAIKEN (Tricky) - AXL (Standard) - ANJI (Standard)

NORMAL : POTEMKIN (Power) - BRIDGET (Standard) - DIZZY (Speed) - VENOM (Tricky)

HARD : MAY (Power) - MILLIA (Speed) - JAM (Speed) - TESTAMENT (Tricky)

VERY HARD : R.KY (Power) - JOHNNY (Power) - CHIPP (Speed) - I-NO (Tricky)

EXPERT : SLAYER (Power) - EDDIE (Tricky) - ZAPPA (Tricky)

If not, I'd gladly have a look at it too.

List looks a bit off to me but whatevers.. im just a duck.

Agreed :v:

I don't really see Bridget being a standard character

(^--- Though if this list is pre-Accent Core, I could see the argument making a little more sense, though I'd say yo-yo glitching being essential at higher levels would change him to "tricky")

I don't see how Order Sol is speed

I fail to see how Baiken is so "tricky"

I fail to see how Testament is "hard" to play

I really fail to see how Slayer is "Very hard" to play.

etc. etc. :(

But maybe it's just me.

baiken attacks you when she's blocking, this is possibly the trickiest character to fight in the game.

i forget how they gauged difficulty -- i'm not sure if it was "difficulty in mastering this character" or "difficulty in reaching 'average' proficiency" in this character. some of it i can see, though.

Zappa more difficult tan I-No? :vbang:

there are four versions of Zappa you have to learn to play, so it's arguable.

Yeah, Baiken's tricky to fight against. But I thought this was written from the perspective of the characters. (AFAIK Baiken's not too tricky to play as)

I think that list came out quite some time ago. Im sure if they made another one it will be quite different. Ky will be in the same spot though.

I think we can safely make some generalizations. Like: Speed Characters: Chipp, Jam, Millia Power Characters: Order-Sol, A.B.A., Robo-Ky,Sol KOF BOSS Syndrome characters: Potemkin,Slayer,Eddie,Testament Trap Characters: Bridget,Venom,Dizzy,Ky, Gay Characters:*See KOF BOSS syndrome* Etc. . . *Edited with Hatred Edge's suggestion.

oh the labels in parentheses refer to "character type", not technical difficulty in playing as them.

Point taken and changed Hatred. But I was meaning something a little different with "Trap". . . Edit: Also, what about Johnny, May, Baiken, Axl, Anji, Faust, and Zappa?
