I have only two friends who are actually into this game. Generally, when we fight we try not to be cheap and have a sort of silent guideline on how to fight.

Online is a whole new world though, you run into Gods who do things you never thought possible, the cheapest people you could ever come across, and some of the most amazing and hair-close battles you'll ever have. I've always wondered though, is there a sort of unwritten law to online play? Is there a sort of silent law structure/manifest that people follow. I have my own ideas, and try to at least be enjoyable to fight, I feel it's safe to assume that everyone has a sort of law structure they follow, right? Or. . .no? Some are "In it to win it" and others are more relaxed about it. What are you're general guidelines to online/public play? (If you have any that is)

:I:

I'm dead serious. I'm actually curious about this.

As far as gameplay is concerned, I'd say there's none.

As for other aspects, IMO some of these "guidelines" for online etiquette would be:

1.- No ragequitting (lol)

2.- No mic abuse (gawd...)

3.- Take the income of battles normally. If you lost, well, don't go all anal about it and start sending hatemail... and if you win, don't act like "lololol i won u noob" or something like that.

I'd also include lag switching, but that's kinda hard to tell imo.

^^ What Asaltacunas said.

Here are a couple more.

1. Try not to corpse stomp (hit an already dead opponent on purpose). I've gotten people to RQ because I threw their corpse lol.

2. Don't give up even if you're getting outplayed. It's kinda sad to watch people drop their controllers and tell me "I don't know what to do against you" *cough*Cookie*cough* *cough*Star*cough* *cough*random players*cough*

3. Don't troll or sandbag if you're a better player. Well that's unless you're fighting a mashy Tager/Noel at which point I'd say go full troll lol.

4. Astral people at every chance you get. If you get them to RQ then you've done your job.

Play to win and don't get upset when you lose, basically.

Note that nothing is "cheap."

Just play the game. It's really that simple.

I could have a nice long discussion about this topic, but it really just comes down to playing the game and doing what you want as long as you're having fun.

1. Do not taunt someone you don't know. If we're friends, that's fine but if you're a total stranger, don't do that crap, especially when I don't know the matchup well and I'm trying to adapt to your playstyle. I don't taunt anyone I fight, period. I take my win and that's that.

2. Don't pick your main against someone who's starting to learn a new character. Sure they have to learn that match eventually but to me that's a form of curb stomping. It's like 'You're trying to learn a new character? Well fuck you, I don't give a shit'.

3. Mics. I hate them. I had this guy who was cursing Mu at the top of his lungs when I beat him in ranked three times in a row. He picked a crappy Tager, then picked a crappy Bang.

4. Lag. I don't mind minimum lag (its online after all) but please, do not enter my room if you know you lag against other people. Gets on my nerves.

Other than that, I'm a very nice person. Sure I get frustrated sometimes but that's because I'm annoyed with my own execution/dropping combos.

2. Don't give up even if you're getting outplayed. It's kinda sad to watch people drop their controllers and tell me "I don't know what to do against you" *cough*Cookie*cough* *cough*Star*cough* *cough*random players*cough*

I only beat your Jin once and probably went 14/15 matches with you. I didn't give up. I was just getting tired that time and was running out of ideas. You did teach me some things with Mu cause hell, you are a persistent Jin.

I'm willing to go 50 if I have to. I *will* beat your goddamn Jin! :arg:

So if I were to taunt you if I see you give up, would that be ok? lol

Hahaha, what? Do you really expect people to guess which characters you "main"?

Legit, according to netplay statistics, those with mics are the ones who rage the most lol.

Also, mics may or may not cause lag.

Other than that, I'm a very nice person. Sure I get frustrated sometimes but that's because I'm annoyed with my own execution/dropping combos.

lol, cookie, why is that you have to remind people that you're a "really nice person" every other day? XD

How could I forget about lag? That should have been number one on my list.

Yup, don't hop online if you know there are people sharing the internet at your place. That's the number one way to get on my nerves.

Persistent Jin, is persistent. He will get in dat ayuss regardless of how many lasers are coming at him lol.

The Mic things are always interesting. I don't own a mic but generally when I do come across people using them they seem to be yammering to themselves about miscallaneous things are are trying to do--it's almost schizophrenic lol.

In terms of Astrals, personally I try to do them as much as I can but almost never do--mainly do to the fact that I'll do a combo and out of reflex I'll do a finishing distortion for it. (Much to my rage) Also using the dreaded accidental break burst happens every now and then too.

Cheapness is always an interesting topic. Everyone has different variations and understandings of it. I personally stand behind the belief that no character on the game is a cheap character--there's no such thing. HOWEVER, some characters have certain abilities that can be exploited cheaply. Noels, Tagers, hell even Ragna's are famous for these. (I'm not saying anyone who uses these characters are cheap, I'm simply stating people can use them as such)

Example, my roommate plays this a loooooot. My other roommate plays it every now and then. Roommate one practices with Bang and Hakumen, he can do most of the challenge modes and when we fight, sparks fly. My other roommate, roommate two, plays every now and then, with Noel. Here's where the tension forms, he can still beat roommate one with the most basic things because he basically exploits all of Noel's invincibility (He's remarkably good at timing for how little he plays) and grab--combos. There's a lot of frustration, hell he even beats me now and then--YET he can't beat the hell mode AI at all and gets stomped online by most people. We on the other hand can do the former and latter quite well. The point I'm trying to make is, while no characters are cheap inherently, some people know how to be "Cheap" with them. (I've probably said cheap a million times by now, sorry)

Anyway I agree with the anti RQ, that's just ridiculous and still surprises me that people do it. Happened to me twice yesterday. The second time I didn't even finish the match he just left.

As for people with new characters I totally agree and try to pick a character I use for fun. (Mainly Tao, I wuv tao)

Lag problems are interesting, my xbox is weird so it lags on and off and I just kind of have to cross my fingers. Needless to say it's lost me a good few battles. (There have been a few times when I've bowed my head and came damn near to giving up)

I've never stomped a corpse, not purposely anyway, but I can see how that could cause some issue with the over sensitive.

Another thing that bugs me is when people will stand still, wait for you to come near them and just repeat and rehash the same thing again and again. It's not cheap or anything, it's just defensive and repetitive. I don't know.

If you taunt me, That's okay. We're friends. v_v

You are silly sometimes so I can let that slide. :3

>_> The characters I main is on my card. I would put in my room that I'm learning a character and people would come in and act all badass with their main. That annoys me. It may not annoy other people but it annoys me. I pick other characters if I see someone learning a new character.

I am a nice person! I make cute anime faces. ^__^

I just would like people to know I'm not some angry black woman. I actually have a good side.

And I mean what I said. I will beat your Jiiin. (v_v)

Im sorry, but this is kinda bullshit. If anything, not using your main would be kind of insulting as they could see it as a form of sandbagging. If they're all "please use a sub" beforehand, then cool, I'm down for that, but otherwise it's business as usual.

Dude, IMO you should forget all that "lol cheap" shit.

If game lets you abuse a resources and it works for you... well, NOTHING stops you from doing it.

If the person is a beginner with that character....that's not something to do, imo. I've seen people curbstomp the hell out of beginners with their main and I can't help but feel sorry for them.

If anything, that should force them to strive to improve with that character.

I know if I was learning a new character, I wouldn't want my opponent to handicap themselves because I feel like I'm getting less out of it. Losing is an experience.

Posted

Hmm, I suppose now that I think about it, if you want to pick your main against someone go ahead. All I was trying to say, (I agree with Cookie) was that it's a bit harsh if the person doesn't know how to use the character they picked. To each their own I suppose.

As for cheap exploitation, I yeah if there's nothing stopping you go ahead. It just kind of seems like a cruel and--unusual punishment to someone who tries really hard to be original lol. Yet those high PSRs for spammers don't lie.

And one more time with feeling, rage quitting is bad!

Posted

I lent cookie my controller and then she blamed me for her tournament loss. :P

Anyways - I have another tip - Try to tell people when they do good things.

I admit to ragequitting a lot lately.

It depends if they're a beginner, period, or just an experienced player learning a new character.

If they're a beginner I'll try to give them some slack so they learn the ropes, although I've seen other people do perfectly fine getting the full offensive and adapting to it.

If they're just a normal player though and they're using a new character, who cares, they picked that character so they shouldn't complain if they lose.

Your controller was stiffer than stale bread. :I:

Meh, this is just from my perspective.

Krieg, we all start somewhere...but last I checked, the place we start is ENJOYING the game first...not getting the crap beat out of us.

That's why, when I start learning a fighting game, I like to play people who are also still learning. I don't mind getting sandbagged so long as I learn something.

Holy shit, this. Part of the reason I don't go online is because some douche is gonna come up and body me with a double perfect 4 times in a row. What the hell would I learn from that?

Posted

Another thing that really grinds my gears online is when it gets to the most intense part of the battle, and all of a sudden---LAG, LAG errywhere. And you kind of just have to sit there and take it up the ass. That is probably the most degrading thing ever, I can't help but feel they're wherever they are going "Tehehehe he sucks," while I die a little more inside.

Yes, it just happened to me, AGAIN.

Then just play someone else.

Look at it this way. Everyone plays online to have fun, right. Well, they don't come online to make sure they play just the right way that makes you happy. They're not there to be your personal entertainer. Everyone just plays at the ability they want and can, and that's all that there is to it.

But you can definitely find people who are on your level or who you get along well with, and you could have lots of matches with them too, so it's not like you're forced to stick with a sea of random douches, or nothing.

I always played random people until I came across the ones that I liked. Then I just switched over to playing with them.

Posted

I do consider some playstyles cheap, such as upbacking, but I never say anything about it because there's no way to support my... belief?

It's just something I wouldn't do because I don't enjoy playing against people like that.

All of the above do not apply to pink throws in lag though.

Green throws are ok since people usually yomi break them anyway, but pink throws are broken on reaction, which is butchered by input delay.

That's it I guess.
