Dreiko Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 To me dubs are like what happens in the US version when they change voice actors of a character already established to someone else. It's not "right" for everyone to sound like they do in the dubs generally, just like how Hazama's new VA or Bang's new VA are not "right" for these characters since there already WAS something established which people liked there. Also, things like Gii being Makoto and Kokonoe being Tsubaki also turn me off of the dub. I just can't take it seriously when people share voices and their names don't start with Son and when there's no plot reason for this but its done just to cut corners.

I'm torn on that actually...I like Julie's bitch voice for Kokonoe, but then I'm going to constantly hear Tsubaki from her.

Well...yeah, but I was kinda annoyed at how they just barged out of nowhere and went "well, you see, I think the dub sucks". It was...just random and seemed to be posted solely to annoy others.
Dreiko Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Where I don't particulally like the voice changes in Extend (though maybe they didn't get the old voice actors back then, like how Spike Spencer voiced Terumi during those small clips in Arcade endings), I will never switch to japanese if it means I have to listen to Taokaka's ear grinding voice. Though overall, BB has really great dub. Dunno man, Tao is one of the worst ones in the dub for me, both voice and script-wise. She makes me cringe with the way she speaks while she's just cute in JP. As for the problems about high pitch, I dunno, I don't understand them I guess. I never had an issue with high pitch in regards to it hurting my ears or whatever, it sounds over-exaggerated of a complaint to be honest. Just...turn the volume down if it's too loud or something. I can hear a turned on tv with the cable box turned off, I can make out that little beep it makes from across the room if there's no other sounds, I think my hearing is quite sharp and I do not mind these voices at all. XD

I think they both sound really cute. I didn't realize how much I liked her dub voice til I watched TMML though. Her VA did a fantastic job with that. The only JP voice I don't like is Kokonoe's. I think the English VA makes her sound more badass and commanding. The JP one sounds really boring in comparison. I'm usually really against dubbing when I don't have a choice of dual audio but, BB is the only game I've played in English (when given the choice). These VA's do a sweet job. Among my favourites are probably Makoto's voice and Relius' (I'm sorry that I don't know these people by name). Pretty sure BB has THE best anime dub I've ever heard (imo of course). Really hope it's possible for whoever is localizing CP to get the original VA's back.

All of the VA's are directed to convey the right emotions at the right time, and its just natural. My favorite is Patrick Seitz as Ragna, its like the guy was born to do the role.

No effects (besides altering his voice, I think). He said that when he entered the recording booth, he was given one direction and ONLY one direction at all: "Go batshit insane".

I've always wondered about that, as someone who loves most dubs, it makes me wonder if these people can even understand what's being said in Japanese. Besides the easy one words like "hello" and "goodbye" not to mention "goodnight". My favorite voices from the game are Patrick, Cristina, and Mela. They just pull it off so well, especially Mela.

Airk Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 I think the problem I have with dubs is that localization is hard. And I don't even mean the traditional idea of localization like "making the jokes work in English". I mean stuff like how do DEAL with a character like Tao, who is basically a talking LOLcat? And "how much do you go for voices that sound like the original Japanese versus selecting voices that actually sound good in English?" It's seriously complicated, because a LOT of stuff that voice actors DO in Japanese just DOESN'T WORK in English; For starters, voice acting in Japanese frequently has the Ham Factor turned up to 11. Characters DECLAIM, and SHRIEK, and generally act like first year drama students told to "emote as much as possible". And if you localize this stuff directly, and try to have your VAs ham it up as much in English as the Japanese actors do, you just end up with characters who sound like idiots; There's nothing wrong with the performance by Bang's (original) English VA, but a lot of people HATE his English voice because he sounds like an idiot. Actually, he sounds like an idiot in Japanese too, but that's normal, so it works to some extent (Though I suspect that the "I don't actually understand what he's saying, but the way he's saying it sounds awesome." factor plays in a lot here too, and once you can understand what he's saying, you realize it actually sounds kinda stupid. Though also to be fair, things DO often just sound cooler in Japanese.) but as soon as you try to do that in English, it becomes awful. Similarly, little girls speaking in super high squeaky voices sounds fine in Japanese, for whatever reason, but if you do that in English, people tend to clap their hands over their ears and flee the room. And that's even leaving aside all the weird Japanese vocal-tics that come into play - how do you translate someone who says "-de gozaru" (or "-desu" or whatever.) after half his sentences. It doesn't MEAN anything, really. If you actually try to translate it, the dialogue comes off hideous and stilted, so you basically end up instead trying to write lines that have a similar effect - namely, lines where the character saying them sounds kindof archaic and old fashioned, which is why Bang's translation is the way it is. So...BB's dub is pretty good, overall, but it's a really hard task, and I don't think it's an art we've quite mastered yet. THAT said, I switch back and forth. Because I think I like the Japanese performances in their ridiculous, hammy glory a little bit better (I speak only slightly more than zero Japanese) but having the dub for the battle voices allows me to get all the JOKES! Tsubaki vs Makoto intro in Japanese is just like "Okay, what?" whereas in English it's pretty funny. ("You're going to practice that UNTIL YOU GET IT RIGHT!") And basically all the humorous combat lines in Japanese are lost on me, while I can appreciate "Press start continue!" or whathaveyou in the English. And BB is a funny game. So... tough choices.

I tend to switch back and forth between the JP/ENG voices because I enjoy the way they sound equally. Additionally, during gameplay, I don't really pay attention to dialogue all that often, so it isn't like I am listening for understanding or anything. I suppose the argument is different when you're playing story mode (something I do not do), but only if you do not like to read the text, and would rather just listen to the dialogue for whatever reason. I would also agree with Airk in that some things in JP don't translate well to English. I think Elizabeth in P4U is another good example (see: CHESTOOOOO).
