Nini Heart Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 It's just getting used to IMO. I know some niggas playing stick who can't do some of the shit I do on pad. It's all personal preference. I don't think one is better than the other.
natearistata Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Same thing happened to me when I started on stick, I couldn't block for shit. That part doesn't last long though.
Lord Knight Posted February 14, 2011 Author Posted February 14, 2011 (edited) what do you think of my Valk Lk, any areas where I should focus on? Felt too wild, but can't blame you. Valk's just that kind of character and he does way too much damage. LK, what do you think of my Noel? Other than the fact that I suck. You need to be more random! Noel is a random random character, and this is where she gets most of her damage from. LK, how do I become less cheesy? You play Mu, right? There's nothing wrong with passive aggressive zoning if that's the character's safest way to do damage. This is true for probably half your matchups, lol. I wouldn't feel bad as a Mu player if I was laming out Carl (who's gonna training mode you if you let him) and Valk (does whatever). hey LK why is it that one day i'm able to do shit (like being able to comboes, punish, and read opponents well) yet the next day i end up getting blown up. i do almost the same amount of practice with excecution and blocking each time i get play yet it just disappears. Combos and punishing situations you can just practice. However, are you sure you aren't confusing "reading" and "guessing"? Think about the times that you're getting hit, and see if you actually recognized the situation, knew the opponent's options, or just thought of something random at a random time and tried to do something. These two things are very different, and I feel like a lot of Tager/Hakumen players overrate the value of "reads". It kind of sucks because Tager sort of relies on that random factor and has to ignore risk/reward occasionally to get the opponent scared of him. Hey LK, what's your take on rather or not it's necessary to use an arcade stick for BB. My use of gaming peripherals generally switch from using either a D-pad, Analog or Arcade stick[bat top] with some mixture of the 3 (and keyboard for Melty/Mugen). But at this point I believe it's only preferences that decides in the end, plus trying to get used to Ball top is killing me. If you aren't in Japan it doesn't really matter what you use. Stick is the best for fighting games overall. Also sticks tend to be standardized while everyone has "their" pad, so if you forget yours/yours breaks in tournament, as long as you keep your stick in good condition, you can just borrow someone elses. Ball top >>>> bat top, for real. Edited February 14, 2011 by Lord Knight
A.X.I.S. Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 LK describe random. I am that whole reply to Luna made me die laughing.
rei-Scarred Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Perhaps he meant be random in matchups that you dont get 720d for being random.
A.X.I.S. Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Perhaps he meant be random in matchups that you dont get 720d for being random. You do 720 because your random.
LunaKage Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 I do pretty random stuff, you just can't tell cuz I'm in blockstun :3 Though I guess I can throw caution to the wind more often, its only CS1 Noel. Good example: One time I was fighting Axis and got so salty that I started smacking the face of my arcade stick, I landed a hit in the midst of said thrashing and hitconfirmed into a 3k+ combo.

KayEff Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Maybe by random he means be more unpredictable.
tofurr Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 What's the best way to go about teaching someone how to play this game who has no idea what they're doing?
atdsutm Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 You make a compelling point, asking a top player for gameplay advice will not at all help strengthen the individual players or the community as a whole. top players wont share their secrets, it doesnt make sense if they did
Rhiya Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 top players wont share their secrets, it doesnt make sense if they did Lies. Be like Biscuits. Give advice, then counter your advice
rei-Scarred Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Had an argument with a fellow player. Hoping you could shed some light LK. Do you think practicing maximizing range and spacing for your character's normals in training mode is viable and/or important. Personally I don't see what there is to practice outside of knowing how far each of your normals reach and where its hit and hurt box is. It doesn't seem like something that should be practiced constantly like execution. Can't it be just as easily learned and practiced by playing matches?
Chris Chaos Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Hey LK; I feel that i've come a long way from when I first sarted playing against you but I want to get your opinion on what I need to do to get better. Where am I lacking to gain that extra push to reach the next level with Jin?

There's essentially nothing in this game that CAN'T be learned and practiced by playing matches. What practice mode is for is learning those things FASTER. Whether this is WORTH practicing or whether you get enough practice just by playing is another question, and it probably depends somewhat on your character. I'm sure there's value in knowing EXACTLY how far all your normals reach, but I would expect there are things that have MORE value (read: You have non-infinite practice time, so you need to practice some things ahead of others). YMMV, however.
Lord Knight Posted February 15, 2011 Author Posted February 15, 2011 LK describe random. I am that whole reply to Luna made me die laughing. Throwing risk/reward out the window. Some characters need to dice roll in order to pull wins, Tager is good at this. What's the best way to go about teaching someone how to play this game who has no idea what they're doing? There's a tutorial, lol. If they have absolutely no idea, the game literally spoonfeeds you. Help them out by clearing some stuff up along the way (like challenge mode combos aren't optimal, etc). Had an argument with a fellow player. Hoping you could shed some light LK. It doesn't seem like something that should be practiced constantly like execution. Can't it be just as easily learned and practiced by playing matches? If you understand the concept of spacing, then this doesn't need to be practiced at all. As you said, the extent of this is to test hitboxes and vulnerable boxes, and testing moves against other moves. You can't totally write it off, because some answers aren't obvious just from playing, but once you have the knowledge, it's not something that should be grinded it out, especially when there are variables in spaces that are really hard to replicate. Hey LK; I feel that i've come a long way from when I first sarted playing against you but I want to get your opinion on what I need to do to get better. Where am I lacking to gain that extra push to reach the next level with Jin? Definitely work your neutral and build up your character knowledge. You tend to jump out at bad times, because you don't know the character well. Also, like most Jin's, you get hit by random shit fullscreen because you're too busy doing things.
LunaKage Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Throwing risk/reward out the window. Some characters need to dice roll in order to pull wins, Tager is good at this. You guys heard it from LK first, turns out I AM playing my character right. Well I've said it before, but its not like people listen to me, I just mod the Noel forums is all. Thanks for the tip LK, I'll be rolling the dice harder than ever now.
Skye Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 So after that scuffle we had, is there anything I need to improve on/change?
Dem Thigh Highs Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 I played you earlier today when you used Tao twice I thought they were good matches especially the second match that got close towards the end. Using Lambda against your Tao was tough finding a way out of those block stings, I know you also main Litchi and I have very little experience against both Tao and Litchi. What do you look for and try to do when fighting Lambda.
A.X.I.S. Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Throwing risk/reward out the window. Some characters need to dice roll in order to pull wins, Tager is good at this. I followed this advice...why does it work so well!?
Airk Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 I followed this advice...why does it work so well!? Because people are expecting you to play "smart"/"the right way"/predictably. And then you're all "Rawr, this is stupid, but it'll kill you if you're not expecting it!" and they're not expecting it.
toanenadiz Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Because being random and taking chances is something only scrubs do?
Rhiya Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Being stupid is supposed to be punishable as fuck. There's a reason you play smart
