good shit at mikado elven. lots of exciting matches and the final one with nemo was crazy.

now that you fought tsubu's bedman what do you think of that character?

Thanks. I think Bedman is a solid character. His pressure is really strong. I wasn't really sure where the gaps were and how to block everything well yet. Pretty nasty crossups too. Was also falling for tick throws too much. I definitely want to fight more good Bedman players.

Mario, check the Xrd video thread. The tournament footage is posted in there.

FIND MEH is rater ridiculous now i'd say.

Indeed and it works really well in tandem with his command throw. Surprised by Samitto's useful of the kunai super.

Chipp IS good. His HP is fine, probably not even lowest in the game anymore, damage output is pretty high. FIND ME is actually useful now, and it makes a significant difference.

Played with GV some more. You can dustloop out of it, 2H GV works, and it's RCable on block until Sol flies off into space.

Chipp hasn't been a popular character even in +R, from my observation. I think people tend to gloss over him is all.

@Xtra, is the reason not many people use him then because of his notoriously low health or Ky/Sol are THAT easy to play?

Sol/Ky are harder than XX, imo. Not many people played Chipp in XX because he had trouble winning and died in 2 combos, sometimes one. On top of being bad, he was also hard to play because of his speed. His health and damage seem much better this time and he has some new tricks so he seems good, but you can still lose easily if you aren't familiar with him because good offense w/Chipp requires a billion decisions per second (down from a trillion in XX). It's going to take some time before new Chipp players populate the Chipp field is all because few people played Chipp seriously in the first place.

shurrickuns: I haven't seen anybody do it yet but there's a way to delay the shurikens in the super so that they hover in the air for a bit. Looks ripe for tricks and wakeup RISC crank.

I've always found more of a "cooru" Western design. Nevermind when I saw Ky I said "fuck it, I'm done trying out characters", Chipp I found was really dope. When I look at the current cast, when Daisuke said he's taking the most popular characters and the moment I didn't see the enigma that is Bridget, I got the feeling Daisuke was taking us here in the Western world into account when choosing who got in this version of the game.

It's why I feel characters like Johnny/Baiken/Anji are very likely to get back into the game very soon. They're "cooru" Western designs as well. I find what designs we find dope here, may not always be the case in Japan, case being Chipp. it's also why we already have the entire Assassin's Guild cast in the game already. If I remember correctly, the character pools back during ArcRevo, asked voters where they lived no?

Wow good to know why Chipp was so ass, and was never really used/good. ACR seems to be his strongest iteration from what I've seen.

Shurikens jack up the guard bar?!

Why are Ky/Sol harder if I might ask?

The most popular characters, huh? We can expect Testament and Justice soon, then.

I mean popular in murrika since boj up there was talking about that, one would expect the likes of Dizzy and Bridget to be priority over japan.

Um... I don't know about that. I think he probably meant 'popular to play' as opposed to 'popular with fandom/casuals'? Bridget is just as popular in the US as japan in that sense. I don't think they're considering what westerners play at all at this point, since we're not the ones playing until console.

But then with some of the characters that were left out.. Iunno. I'd have thought Dizzy, jam and johnny would be more or as common as... I-No, Chipp, Axl... but perhaps our sampling POV is skewed by only what we get to see from certain arcades. Are there still numbers on character use from the +R player's guild or is that gone already?

Chipp and Axl are required fighting game archetypes. If they were omitted, they would have been replaced by characters with similar mechanics. I-No is pretty important to GG's semblance of a story, and was relatively popular. Jam and Johnny aren't particularly mechanically unique nor storyline important nor even that popular afaik, so I'm not surprised they're missing. Dizzy is both mechanically unique AND canonically important, so I'm surprised she's missing.

tl;dr: ASW rolled some dice for characters who the fuck knows

Dunno why Axl is a "required fighting game archetype" when we already have a footsies-oriented zoner in Faust. Or I just don't get something about Axl.

As for the lack of Dizzy, I feel that she might've got the cut simply because she's one of the most morphing characters in the franchise, and since they already got their hands full with Zato (another important morpher), they might've decided to spend their time and resources on some other characters for now.

If u compare Axl and Faust in term of Gameplan. Faust is closer to Venom / Dizzy with Random setup, Axl is closer to Jam imo. and i'd agree with Xtra_Zero lol.

Well axl only resembles jam in that he can rack up guard bar and put real good pressure. He kinda plays his own game, imho he is closest to johnny

Well with Axl now having an actual anti-everything reversal I'm inclined to view him as the Sagat while Faust's the Dhalsim.

Well, there's something to be said for variety.

Let's say that Sol and Ky are the most popular characters in GG. If EVERY character was like Sol or Ky, the game would be boring. There would be no variety in who you could fight against, even if you only play Sol! Furthermore, if you like Sol and Ky in the first place, adding copies of them is redundant and doesn't add much value to the game since you've already been satisfied. It would be similar to going to a Buffet and only being able to choose from 20 types of similar chocolate cakes; at some point having extra variations of the same thing does really help.

So, I can imagine that part of the character selection process was not a measure of how popular a particular character was, but rather an attempt to maximize the number of player's covered which would mean excluding overlapping characters. For instance, people may like Johnny, but I-No has a bit more of a unique style.

The second half would be variety to fight against. Having the game consist of a bunch of mirror matches would be boring. People can only take Sol vs Ky for so long. They also probably wanted different characters that felt different to fight against since you're opponents are just as important as your character. Otherwise, we'd just play against sandbags. To that end, going against Axel is a lot more different than Order Sol or Johnny.

And finally, though this is just an errant thought, it might also because of balancing concerns. It's possible they wanted a certain spread of characters to start with to make balancing easier. For instance, imagine that the game had no projectile zoners to begin with, or no Axel. If they added him in later it would create a balancing issue that might take awhile to resolve (see Hazama) because the original characters weren't designed him characters like that in mind. Or maybe they were designed with zoners in mind, leaving them with moves and properties that would be completely useless for months or years until DLC or sequels come out.

---

So, in the end, the character choice might not be a popularity vote, but rather an attempt at the developers to maximize the number of players who can find a main they enjoy and to give the fights variety.

If EVERY character was like Sol or Ky, the game would be made by Capcom.

Fixed.

Solid post otherwise. I still think a couple of the more popular characters were purposely withheld to foster interest in DLC and/or the inevitable sequels. But really, it's all conjecture at this point. "We're basing the roster on character popularity" is a very developer-ish thing to say, because it satisfies the fans and a more accurate answer would have likely been needlessly long-winded or prematurely divulged which characters they were or weren't planning to feature. I'm sure a lot more factors went into the final decision process than just "popularity", whether that was referring to character usage or the broader definition.

By the by, has anybody caught any footage of M.O.M mode that folks know of? I was curious if it functions the same as in previous games or if they've changed things up for Xrd at all.

I did see some some footage where it looks like with your points you can either purchase or unlock(?) new items that give effects similar to Faust items or other character's moves like Robo-ky mkII from Isuka. I can't recall examples I saw but I'm pretty sure the example I saw had Slayer in it, if anyone knows which footage I'm talking about? Pretty sure it was on youtube somewhere.
