If it was a true blockstring he wouldn't have been able to backdash and we would have seen GUARD BONUS pop up like the old tao blockstrings.

No I mean until the guard bonus popped up, it was a true blockstring up to that point, causing the guard bonus to occur. He backdashed after the guard bonus was in effect, which I think is mostly due to Tao noticing it and adjusting her approach which allowed for a hole.

The point is mainly to showcase how good her approach is that it can do that lol.

edit: Rereading, I misread your word "would" for "wouldn't". Sorry. There indeed is a guard bonus, you can see it on the left! It kinda melds with the background. Pause around 2:26-2:27 to see it more clearly.

Yup. that's true guard bonus. Pretty sure that depends on azrael standing though as the first jump attack isn't gonna hit gapless if he is crouching I think. doesn't necessarily mean that makes it easy to get out.

I guess what I meant to say is that she's been able to do this in every game pretty much. I can't think of one where she couldn't on taller characters.

She may have been able to do it but I didn't really see them do it in matches at all but now it seems like the go-to combo/mixup route vs standing foes which makes it intriguing.

Also, didn't Tao like, outright not have j2B in some games? I remember it used to be her old jB and her current jB used to be j236B back when she didn't have the current j236B at all and then they made it into a normal. Then in some games she didn't have her current j2B and only her current jB. Not sure if she could still do the infinite blockstring with other normals or what though.

Taokaka's jump is different somehow that gives her fuzzies on a large portion of the cast. I'm not sure if she falls faster or what it is, but there is something that affects this in some way.

whoah, hey, guard bonus doesnt require airtight pressure to activate, it works with small gaps, i think under 4 frames. holla.

The Dustloop wiki says "If you are stuck in blockstun for over 6 seconds straight (meaning there's not even a 1 frame hole in the opponent's attacks for 6 seconds), you automatically begin instant-blocking all attacks and the words "Guard Bonus" will appear on the side of the screen."

Is it wrong?

So that Mai Natsume rubber strap first print bonus doesn't exist? :P

Seriously though, it's coming to Xbox One. This has been known since the game was announced.

I have it preordered

Pretty certain it's wrong, I know some Tao strings that trigger guard bonus using restands that aren't frame tight. Persona follows the pattern as well, there are rejump Aigis strings that have a 2f gap after she jumps, and it still activates guard bonus. It's fairly insignificant in actual play so I assume it was never brought up.

Never heard of guard bonus before.

And errol, I heard in the Tao forums that her jump a might have a bigger downwards hitbox. Might have something to do with it.

this is the first i've heard of guard bonus activating even with gaps in it. i suppose it's possible, i've never done any tests with it and copied it over from a jp source ages ago.

perhaps if the blockstring would have been gapless on normal block for 6 seconds, then guard bonus activates?

Well, it is definitely true that guard bonus doesn't deactivate if there is a gap, because the IB stuff of guard bonus makes gaps in rachel's blockstrings.

I think this came up before when the 'koko infinite blockstring' thing came up.

It's pretty easy to test but we have reliable sources saying it is so anyway.

If the BB guard bonus is anything like Persona's it applies to small gaps too.

With Minazuki you can repeatedly do [2a > 5b > 2b > 2ab > 214a > 4a > 4ab] x N so as long as you have 25 SP to spend and around the 2nd rep the guard bonus kicks in, Sweep is not air tight if IB'd and neither is 4a > 4ab, even on normal block. There isn't a big enough gap for a move to actually come out, with a few exceptions it'll usually end in the blocker getting FC'd, but it's a gap.

Posted

Well a move with invuln will come out, but the point is still there that guard bonus doesn't require an airtight string.

Responding to guard bonus discussion:

I believe the maximum gap you can have is 4 frames to still initiate guard bonus.

This is 4 frames /not counting instant block/. The actual bonus is triggered by normal blocking something after being in blockstun for a set amount of time, that amount of time i dont have a specific figure for.

So, pretty much this means you can stave off the guard bonus notification by instant blocking manually when the guard bonus would normally initiate. The moment you normal block something as part of a string you will get the notification.

For example, you can still have something count towards guard bonus with a /seven frame gap/ as long as you instant block a sequence that would normally create a 4f gap on normal block.

edit: by i dont have a specific figure for the amount of time i mean testing the exact amount of frames to verify it would be ridiculously monotonous and i dont think i want to do that, but i'll ballpark it at 360f (No matter how many gaps or of what size as long as it is under 4f on normal block, it activates at 365f in my recording and i dont want to figure out a string that is 5 frames shorter in total duration) which sits nicely with the estimation of 6 seconds.
