The main thing that makes a round robin better (and this is absolutely crucial) is that people don't get one and done'd. Two lost competitive matches and nothing else is going to sour anyone off a game if they're hesitant to play it to begin with, and that's going to happen to a quarter of your players in a double elim. With the round robin, people commit to a couple of matches, and if everyone is new, players will probably random out other players a lot and get wins, which makes them feel good and helps promote a positive attitude towards the game. You could also just break it up into groups, and do group round robins (3-5 people in each group), then take the top player from each group and do semifinals and stuff. Bit like pools in a larger tournament. That should reduce the amount of matches substantially. Because netplay is a supplement to playing people locally, not a replacement for it. No matter what, the game is always a little different in netplay, even if it's only by a bit. Offline is what counts most.

I've mostly just seen people rewire the stick to put select/back as one of the eight buttons on the front so that they could plink with it. Completely impossible in an arcade, but tourney legal. I'm not sure why we're trying to make our tourneys exactly like arcade tourneys, tbh. If that's the desire, actually run them on cabs. If they're not run on cabs, it's different in so many ways from the start that making rules to make tournaments more "arcade-like" is just going to be making a bunch of arbitrary rules. I said it before: if you -really- want it to be like the arcades, you'd have to ban pads, have everyone use the same sticks, etc. etc.

Everyone is bullshit in heavy frame delay. "Oh, I now have to predict the state of the match 7 frames from now? Uhhh, okay." *gets purple grabbed*

Want to start joining tournaments, but i'm nervous.

You're gold. Seriously. Don't worry about any of the other crazy shit -- if this is the only rule you follow, you'll be fine. As per the other stuff: Most majors these days have online preregistration. When you show up, you'll generally get in a line for people who've preregistered (and please, for the sake of the TOs, preregister), get your stuff, and then just have some fun playing casuals, etc. When the tournament starts, just be where your TO/pool handler wants you to be, and be there on time, then play your match, then don't stay on the setup if it's still needed. Consoles are listed somewhere in the rules or tournament announcements, yeah. Going to a tournament is an amazing experience, because it's rare to be surrounded by so many people with the same hobby, and it's doubly rare to get the opportunity to play good players from around the country, then just hang out with whoever you run into. It's just really fun. -

I don't mind the casual attitude. XSEED's twitter is really casual feeling, but it's one of the better company Twitters I've seen. What bothers me is the lack of meaningful updates, and poor responses to information requests. Just for reference: https://twitter.com/XSEEDGames https://twitter.com/ArcSystemWorksU/ To be fair, XSEED has a bit of a leg up in that they localize titles people were afraid they'd never get, while ArcSys US delays the shit out of things we knew we'd get. >_> -

Yeah... I think ArcSys has just forgotten they released AC+ on PSN internationally at this point, and give no fucks about 360 whatsoever. -

Does anyone have the official Guilty Gear Stick?

http://www.amazon.com/SoulCalibur-Arcade-FightStick-Edition-Playstation-3/dp/B006EJ38W8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1378422298&sr=8-4&keywords=madcatz+fightstick Or the 360 version as applicable. It's basically a TE, just with different button placement. -
I'm anime as fuck, so Touhou. For my normal monitor and my CRT, it's about 2 frames, or 33 ms. For better LCD monitors, the difference is much more negligible -- EVO monitor's around only around half a frame slower than my CRT, for instance.

I play fightan gaems (in HD, son) and shmups on an old CRT computer monitor. It's godlike. The lack of ghosting really helps, too. Lots of overhead animations are so much easier to make out.

If losing 27-2 traumatizes you, you should stop playing fighting games, or grind -really- fucking hard. It's gonna happen again. And again. And again.

If it's obscure or weird, people sometimes legit can't figure out the answer -- or if the answer isn't something they've ever tried to think about, they just might not get it. In Melty, I had people keep getting out of my pressure for free by jumping. I thought I knew how to deal (just do staggers), so I kept doing the same shit. After a while, I realized that if the kept getting out, I obviously didn't know shit about stopping jumpouts, so I hit up training mode and actually learned how to deal. (normals whiff 5a more normals, certain specials, etc.) Much more effective, now. Anyways, moral is, sometimes people don't adapt because they don't know how.
-
The only way to get better, past a certain point, is to follow this procedure: [Play matches>save replays>watch replays>"What didn't I know how to answer?"/"What caused me to lose?">go to training and work on, fix, or learn the answer to that concrete thing] x N

You'd better be getting a camera to take pictures.

My internet is not suitable for fightan gaems, and hasn't been for a month. Shit sucks -- I'm almost starting to look into other things, since I also moved away from the small scene I had and don't have a car yet. I wish I was playing Melty every day, but it's just not happening with this internet.

Agreeing that Ragna has the most "normal" hitbox in the game. He's best for practicing most things.
-
Yeah, but the technical screwups being covered by the ridiculously good yomi just makes it brilliant. It's the funniest thing I've seen all week.
-
Oh my god. That was amazing.

IB gives you less blockstun. It's like the opposite of frame delay, which effectively gives you more blockstun. They're clearly related

At first, I played Tsubaka because charge cancelling reminded me of whiff cancelling in Melty. Then, she got nerfed into the ground, so I tried Relius, since he was new and vaguely reminded me of Liese, who I played in Arcana. Finally, I realized I got tired of dealing with people's shit on oki, switched to Litchi, and had more fun with the game ever since. I'm very gameplay-oriented when it comes to picking characters, and I consider it miraculous when I can play my favorite character and enjoy their playstyle. That miracle happens in Melty (Akiha is amazing, and CVAki is one of the best-feeling characters I've ever played), so I love playing it. In BB, my favorite character is Rachel, bar none, but her exec is just not up my alley, and playing her doesn't feel as good as playing Litchi (because the okizeme is just so fucking good).

Guilty Gear Vastedge XT concept illustrations and story line thread

I'd count it as that if it weren't for the colors. Black/grey/blue is a pretty iconic set of colors with that symbol
